Q & A with Summit County Art Teachers

Art Teachers Wanted

On Wednesday, January 29, 2014 the General Store & News Stand Comics, located in Quaker Square on the University of Akron campus, invites you and your family to stop by and check out our facility.  We are looking for any input you can contribute about expanding our previous success working with the Akron Public Schools during our annual Free Comic Book Day on the 1st Saturday of May.  Light refreshments will be served and we are planning a Q & A period with teachers around 5:30 PM.

Over the past three years we have teamed up with APS art teacher Bill Rose and Betty Jane Elementary School to bring together Comic Book artists with students of all ages in a themed comic art contest.  Great prizes are awarded, the students participate in a Q & A session with the comic artists, and just have a whole lot of fun.  Last year alone we gave out over 1000 free comics while students, their families, and customers met over ten artists who provided sessions on comic book creation.  We had artists such as Mike W. Barr (DC Comics), Marc Sumerak (Marvel Comics), and Craig Boldman (Archie Comics) participate, just to name a few, as well as many other local artists.

Among the topics for the Q & A session will be:

Akron Public Schools again providing art work from students to be entered into a themed art contest.  Judging will take place during Free Comic Book Day by the attendees of the event with fabulous prizes awarded to the winners in two categories, 13 and younger and over 13.  Additionally, the comic professionals will supply feedback on some of the submissions.

Betty Jane School runs incentive programs building up to this event around attendance and tardies.  We will be looking for suggestions about how to further engage with the high schools this year during our Q & A session with teachers at the store.

Activities and events already planned for this year are:

On Friday, May 2, assemblies are planned by grade level at Betty Jane School with students and teachers interacting with three of our comic artists, watching the artists produce their art, talk about their craft, and participating in Q & A sessions.

In the evening of May 2 an additional assembly is planned at 6:00 PM at Betty Jane School with students, their families, and the local community interacting with the same artists.  All are welcome.

Saturday, May 3 will be this year’s Free Comic Book Day at the General Store, with free comics, meeting the professional comic artists, and opportunities to get artists’ autographs.

This year we are also considering hosting a lunch with the comic artists where students could bring a box lunch to eat while enjoying conversation with one of our artists.  Students would have to sign up for the free tickets in advance since there would be a limited number of seats available.

We are also working on a number of other events which we should be able to announce on January 29 during your visit.

Have We Got A Deal for You!

Posted March 13, 2013 By Robert

We are attempting (as always) to get new subscribers.  As you probably know, subscribers help us “guess” the number of books that we need to order.  The more books we order provides us a better cushion to over-order so we can have books on the shelf (for extras) for you and others.  This means if there is a book you want to check out or try to get (that you normally wouldn’t) there is a better chance we will have it on the shelf in this situation.

We need your help to accomplish this.  We don’t want your help for free though.

We are asking you to bring us subscribers.  Do you know a friend that likes comics? Bring them to us.  Have you overheard a conversion about comics and joined in?  Send them our way.  While in line waiting for the next comic related movie, will you talk to someone about comics?  Tell them about us.

Here’s the deal:

For every subscriber that you bring in they will get a 10% discount and you will receive a credit on their purchase equal to there  10% discount.

WHAT?  You don’t understand?  Here’s an example…

Let’s say John comes in and pays $40 worth of books.  He will get a $4 discount and you would get a $4 credit put into your account.

This credit will continue for one year from the point the referral starts.

To help you get the word out, we have business cards that you can grab and pass out.  Put your name on the back so we know you are the referral and have the person bring it in with the comics they want to have pulled in their subscription.  We will add your name as the referral on their account and the rewards can come flowing in…

Remember: We offer a discount to subscribers.  This means you can proposition customers that get comics by mail order or from other stores.  The only exception to this is subscribers at JC Comics.  We have a strong connection with them and do not want to jeopardize our relationship.

Betty Jane Visiting Artist Program

Posted March 23, 2012 By sorris

Betty Jane CLC welcomed comic book artists Brendon and Brian Fraim for an all-day visit to the school Friday, March 23. The inaugural “Visiting Artist Program” aimed to introduce students to professional artists who make a living doing what they love.

Coordinated by the Akron Public Schools art department and local comic book store The General Store and Comics, the program was established as an incentive for students to excel in the classroom.

“We’re excited to welcome the Fraim brothers to Akron and hope the students find this event rewarding and fun,” said Bill Rose, an art teacher at Betty Jane CLC. “We plan to host similar events and have found it to be an effective way to motivate students to perform their best.”

The Fraim brothers – twins who’ve made names for themselves as artists for comics, magazines, illustrations, games and storyboards –  interacted with students, gave art demonstrations and talked about how to become a professional comic book artist. They also donated sketchbooks featuring their artwork for a raffle.

Students earned raffle tickets throughout the year based on attendance. Student events during the day ran from 8:35 a.m.-2:15 p.m. An evening event opened to the public ran from 5:30-7 p.m. at the school.

In addition to their visit to Betty Jane CLC, the Fraims attended a free meet-and-greet with fans at Quaker Square’s General Store and Comics on Saturday, March 24, from 11 a.m.-4 p.m.

Attendees were encouraged to bring their own artwork. The Fraim brothers critiqued and judged submissions for prizes.

Learn more about the Fraim brothers at BrosFraim.com.
